Merry Christmas Scotty

Birmingham Nutrition Conference

In between a couple of colds, a bad sinus infection and not a lot of training, I was invited down to Birmingham University as part of an athlete panel representative for the Nestle/Powerbar sponsored Nutrition conference.

The weekend was very interesting with lectures covering a variety of Nutritional sporting methodologies by some the leading scientists, researchers and practitioners from around the world. The weekend was headed up by Asker Jeukendrup, fellow Ironman Hawaii finisher & Sports Scientist Department Head of Birmingham University.

More on the weekends venue with lots of pictures can be viewed on the link below.

November Update

I forgot mention in my last blog, prior to coming home to Scotland, The Dresdner Kleinwort triathlon team attended and raced the Frankfurt marathon. The Frankfurt marathon is the 3rd biggest marathon in Germany behind Berlin & Hamburg & Dresdner Kleinwort was the main title sponsor of event so we competed as 2 relay teams.

Being a team of 7 there was an auction on the DKIB website to triathlon fans for the extra relay spot. Karl is guy in the middle that won the slot.

The weekend was an enjoyable experience as jet lagged as I was but very interesting behind the scenes of such a big race. It was also very awesome to see the Kenyan marathon runners prepare & go to work. The reality of how good they were was clear as day when I stood at the 12km mark as the first pack went by in just under 36 mins – that’s sub 30 min 10km pace and then the course record was eventually broken at about 2hr 7 min 36 secs. The Germans also had something to celebrate as two German lady's placed 1st & 3rd also in a cousre record of around 2hr 26 mins.

Aberdeenshire Youth Squad at Knockburn

This weekend I will be attending and doing some coaching at the second Aberdeenshire Youth Triathlon squad get together at Knockburn loch. The squad will be split up into 2 age groups, 10-13 yrs and 14-16-t yrs.

The day will consist of both the cycle and run components in the morning, followed by a coached swim session at Banchory swimming pool in the afternoon. I’ll be helping out with the run session in the morning and coaching the older group on swim session later on in the afternoon.

70.3 World Champs

Also this weekend is the Clearwater 70.3 Ironman World Champs. The 70.3 race series for those that don’t know is what is more commonly known as the ½ ironman - ½ the distance of the full ironman event. 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike followed by a half marathon. If you add the total distance together it equals 70.3 miles thus the brand name of the event.

The 70.3 event is now in its 3rd year of holding a world championship event and as previously stated Fraser & Cat are heading the charge for Scotland and also from down south is Bella Comerfords other half to be England’s Stephen Bayliss.

The world champs can followed on line by clicking on the live feed at the ironman live website and Fraser Cat & Stephen website are below

Finally.. Kona Report 2008

The race for me just didn’t materialise and Im now unfortunate to have recorded my first DNF on my 9th Ironman race since 2005.

The night before I felt a cold coming on with my nose running late afternoon & then blocking up by dinner time. After toiling of whether this was just in head or not I got in touch with the team & took some medicine once clearing the ingredients for banned substances – this is always a stress especially with the limited time factor I had.

My airways were cleared during the night and that was fine. I went to sleep at about 8 - 8:30pm and stuck pretty much to my normal routine.

The swim on reflection was below par I’m not sure what happened but maybe got beat up a little too much at ¼ way though the swim and fell short of the 2nd pack being split into a 3rd pack. From the times I’ve been doing with guys I know I’m just as strong if not stronger than Norman and Maki in pool and they both made 2nd easily enough so a mistake on the swim perhaps.

Coming out the water I still felt good, that was until I mounted the saddle. Actually getting to my bike in transition I was confused at first as my spare tyre was gone and after a few secs of hesitation to see if was on the ground somewhere, I went on without one – I later figured out that my tyre exploded during the swim and officials were kind enough to swap my tyre before me finishing the swim.

Early on the the bike I began blowing far too hard for the effort I was putting into my legs and just couldn't keep pace with the other riders around me. My face felt over heated and as if the all the moisture had been sucked out of my face. My throat was a swollen on the inside and felt sore to swallow as I tried to take on fluids and my 1st powerbar gel of the day. At about 15km’s in roof of my mouth was swollen also like an inverted u shape arch. I can then recall backing off the pace for a min or 2 settling myself down, felt fine again for a brief spell and pushed with a 2nd wind. But when I did the short climb up Palani that’s when things started to get ugly again, and into the early parts of the Queen K I felt very uncomfortable one might say.

Heading down past the yacht club was about the point when my stomach cramped up, like an obscenely bad stitch both sides of my rib cage and then after a brief interlude or reprieve I thought I was better I began vomiting on the bike which was ultimately ending my day out in Kona.

I was forced to come off bike twice to be sick and couldnt stop the queezy sensation of being sick again to stop and this was when the reality of yes I think I could go on for a wee bit longer but I knew that even If I had, I wouldn’t be seeing the crowds of Alii Drive in 2008 – this in itself is a pretty gut wrenching thought.

After I stopped I just felt horrible and light headed & in light of how early was in race it was I know that I wouldn’t of been able to do much more on the course other than make self worse. After being checked by the medi van (30 mins gone by) I pedaled back to transition where I felt sick again on the bike and dizzy, which I did so for the rest of the day..

I couldn’t consume solids, just small consumptions of fluids and by the end of the day I was able stomach some soup.

The day after my nose was blocked & my mucus was yellowy/green so it was definitely a cold and it took just over week to recover fully from.

My day was over but the rest of the Dresdner Kleinwort Team it was of mixed emotions. Norman was obviously going for the win but suffered with cramps when leading the race & caught by the faster runners on the run course and fell back to 12th. Marino being one of secret favorites this year had bad spells on the bike made which he was make up time up on the marathon from 22 to 12th before going into another bad spell and finishing 21st by the end.

For Mathias & Maiki they were both ecstatic with their results – Mathias’s goal all season was to top 10 in Kona and to place 8th was huge for him and for Makii in his first trip to Kona surpassed all his expectations for a very solid 14th place finish.

Below is some Video blogs I didn’t have time to download whilst in Kona as I had some internet / laptop problems… but better late than never.

Clerwater 70.3 World Champs

The ½ iron distance champions is next week either 8th or 9th of November.

Flying the flag for Scotland is Fraser Cartmell UK 70.3 winner 2007 & 2008 and multi world duathlon Champion Catriona Morrison – fingers crossed for good performance from both of them. If my memory serves me right Fraser & Cat placed 7th & 5th respectively last season. Live updates & video feed can be seen on the ironman live site as normal.

Chow for now its Halloween this weekend & Ive a couple party’s to catch up my mates, fancy dress style of course.

Race Build Up

"Aloha! My ambitions are really just to improve on last years position (31st), I trained specifically to peak for the UK event this year and with the UK Ironman two weeks later in the season making the two races four weeks apart doesn't give you much time to prepare when you take your recovery and taper periods out of that time.

Preparation has simply been been that... recover from the UK Ironman try get back into light training to get some fitness back and then tick over and rest again for Kona.

My hopes If I have a good day I guess would be to improve on last season and make top 20 / top 15 - I'm not going in with any expectations, just race and see what happens and build on my pro experience. Looking long term, it was always my intension to aim specifically for Kona come 2009, this I see as bonus race and learning experience for the future races to come.

Since UK Ironman I traveled over to San Diego for 2 weeks of training (building into training), and met the rest of the Dresdner Kleinwort team (Norman Stadler team captain, Mathias Hecht, Maiki Tweisliek, Marino Vanoekanker), in their six week preparation camp. Going over to the West Coast earlier should acclimatise myself better to the heat, food and time zone acclimation compared to the last two years travelling out six days before (2006 amateur / 2007 1st pro start there).

All in all I'm looking forward Ironman Hawaii, it is the pinnacle of triathlon like the Tour de France is in cycling and what you put the hours of training in for."

Race Report

Well what can I say, the last few days in Sherborn I was pretty relaxed and excited to back yip it was Ironman time and I knew was in good shape to challenge again.

It was a good weekend by the end of it and my smile grew bigger & bigger as the race progressed. It wasn’t a win as hoped but as I’ve always said every time I hit that finishing its one the best feelings in the world.

1st Brit Champion in 2007 & runner-up in 2008 that’s pretty consistent. A reversal of last years top 2 but the damage for another win was made early into the swim leg.

I knew the swim was going to fast and prepared for it but after a long wait in the water and being held in the water I was cold and stale off the bang. I tried staying with front pack but got dropped early on. It then took me a while to settle the breathing down & establish my rhythm and moved to settle into a small group that included Nick Saunders.

Coming out of the water I made the break from the group to get a fairly quick transition but wasn’t best pleased to hear I was back in 11th or 12th place. But this being my 8th Ironman since taking up the sport in 2005 I knew that its early doors and sticking to my own pace would count big later on.

Jumping onto my Kuota Queen K freshly delivered just days before the start it was the beginning of what turned out to be a long 112 miles or 113miles by my reckoning. The conditions were very demanding, strong winds and cold weather. I prepared for the worst and wrapped up in some 2XU compression wear.

The bike was pretty steady until Nick caught up me up in the first 20 mins or so and then jostled our position through out the bike picking off the early pace setters throughout the morning. On the 3rd lap I was getting a sore back and then notice my tri bars were knocked off center by about 30 degrees not good but with no alan key I just got on with it (I was fine right hand bends).

The time checks we were getting was that Stephen and Fraser were 8/9 mins ahead with the gap to Spence narrowed down to about 4 mins. The third lap I was starting get a bit weary and ran out of power gels due to a bottle leak when arriving in transition, but was lucky that a lady age grouper was well stocked with powerbar gels and gave me one hers – Thank you it was really needed. I worked my up to 4th going into Transition and changed kit and headed out onto the marathon course. Time checks were still 8 / 9 mins to Stephen and Fraser and then about 3 1/2 to Spencer. Starting attentively I made visuals on all the guys heading out up the first climb and thought the race is still in reach (similar time I gained on Brian Rhodes last year). By the end of lap 1 I had Spencer on the radar and reeled in him for the pass through the grounds of Sherborne. Heading up the next hill section I saw I made significant inroads into Frasers time and a little on Stephen and figured I would reel Fraser in around 16/17 miles but heading through cross country muddy road bit, my guts started to play up and had nip off for a No.2 which me a couple of mins then began the run again feeling a lot better and with some bounce. Stuey caught the full moon and best appreciate it. The time check was about 4 mins plus the time I lost for the bathroom stop. A man’s gotta do what man’s gotta do. Then about 12 / 13 miles I was shocked to see Fraser so soon at top of a rising hill walking and throwing his hands down, muttering something before starting to run again. Closing in I signaled to camera man if that was 2nd place and got the nod. Coming through the girls school I hit the next aid station with a sip of coke and surged to make the pass significantly and didn’t look back. I think Fraser dropped out in the next mile or 2 Im not sure. It was almost a similar Bryan Rhodes moment of 2007 but no tap this year. Through the next loop the time between Stephen was still about the same as was at the start of the marathon & at mile 23/4ish I made a visual on Stephen heading into his last mile. At that point I knew the race was over for the win and backed off the pace to coast last 3 miles to simply hold my time over Andreas who had over taken Spencer at this point.

What a day hitting the town and final stretch I enjoyed the last mile high fiving the crowds, not quite the same extacy at last but still very gratifying.

Im home for the next 2 days then fly to San Diego to meet my Dresdner Kleinwort team mates for a final prep camp before Kona. The team sent me a camera last week to use in my up coming camp so stay tuned as i try to give an insight to a working pro ironman athlete.

Damaged Race Frame

Training is still going fine and ontrack for UK Ironman that was until a chunk of carbon was taken out of my bike TT frame last Wed & found myself in big panic to

a) try get a new frame replacement be sent to me before IM UK which Im still dealing with

and

b) construct a my road bike so I could race the Little woody this past weekend which I couldn’t not race after their kind invitation. After pulling parts from the TT frame & bits and pieces from other bikes I tried setting up as best as possible but not ideal. It takes me back to last years Euopean LD Champs when I had borrow a womans road bike to race when the airrlines lost my bike en Route to Belgium then turned up 5 weeks later in Milan. Anyway I had a bike to ride by Thursday night before I travelled down to England on the Friday morning. And rode it for the second time on race day. Its been about 3 years since Ive sat on a road bike.

The bike damage wasn't anything to do with the bike design but I think a combination of 2 events happening in the past week or so of training.

Whilst cycling through Edzell my twin bottle cage that mounts on my seat post broke - the 2 screw pin heads sheared off and the profile bottle cage and spares bag fell into my wheel & fork - I narrowly avoided a crash when this happened but there was no damage to wheel or frame to be seen.

I'm speculating that when this incident occured it may have caused a minor stress fracture in the carbon on the rear fork as this is the similar spot to where the chunk eventually broke - I was slowing from 40 kph/hr approx when this happened. The incident occured just outside a pub where there were some foreign motor cyclists having a drink. One of them pointed out candidly that it wasn't the way to stopping a pedal cycle! but they were pretty helpful in seeing if I was ok and gave me some tie wraps to pin the Twin cage back on the bike until I got home.

The following week when training 2 of my rear wheel spokes broke during a TT high gear session. I removed the broken spokes from the wheel but the bike balance wasnt right when i started pedaling again so aborted the session as the balance felt warped. I pedalled easy back home. When I got home to change the my Training wheel over with another thats when I saw the chunk of carbon was missing. The chunk taken out is on a load bearing beam, It doesn't look much 3.5cm x 2.5cm But you can't risk riding it as it would only take 1 bump or pothole at speed to maybe snap and risk a bad fall.

I think the 2 incident were related and when the spokes broke into the frame that opened up the breakage.

The Woody

Woody results

In light of the stress of getting a bike put together for the race it wouldn’t be like me to have a smooth going race… Although the results has me in 2nd place My place shouldn’t count.

There was a lot of confusion of what the right run course was due a marshall giving indifferent instructions to the first guys out onto the field.

Who did what is a little bit of a mystery but I know I went short for sure & asked to be DQ’d. Who did short, wrong or long I don’t know I can’t comment. And how a certain Irishman ;-) finshed coming in off the bike in/out baffled most people.

The race was sent off in 2 waves. The main field going off first and then the elite wave going off 2nd 15 mins later.

The elite start was just me and Spencer although 2 others were expected to start with us but went in the main field.

The race itself is actually in a very cool location the swim was in a fresh water quarry and the bike leg was in the surrounding country side though the Forrest of Dean with approx 1200m+ of climbing and then the run leg was partly off-road and then a 3 looped dog leg course with about 500m of climbing.

I was pretty happy with the swim although it came up with my time before Spence’s on the time mats, but it was Mr Smith that lead around the swim . The bike leg was very challenging and It was the most enjoyable courses I’ve ever done. It wouldn’t be far of saying that its just as challenging as the UK 70.3 course.

It would have been nicer to of been closer to Spencer on the bike as I thought I was riding pretty well on the road bike but unfortunately punctured at about 20 miles not far before the first aid station. My first attempt of a repair didn’t work using the Vitoria pit stop - that got me about ½ a mile up the road before having to stop again this time swapping my front tyre with a spare. It was a bit frustrating at the time but I kept pretty cool about and got on with the race. I maybe lost between 7-8 mins over the 2 stops.

Heading out onto the run course I felt pretty good until the confusion of what the correct run routes were once out onto the dog leg sections.

To be fair I don’t blame the marshal as it is the athletes responsibility to know the course but I think I missed 1 part of a dog leg in 1 of the laps but with the a marshal giving different instructions at the same point in the course & then seeing athletes doing indifferent routes to one another it lead to much confusion but I think the overall winner was rightly awarded. Eanea placed in 4th was running very well and should be placed higher - I’m pretty sure he did the right course for the loops anyway but his finish entry was a mystery. On my last lap I got up to Spencer which I think ran long and jogged the last ½ mile with him as we were both just as confused and didn’t think we did the right course.

Outside the top few I’m pretty sure everything was sorted everyone else got the course right.

Big congratulations to James Parker and all the other Iron distance athletes that complete the Iron distance competition. The weather wasn’t great when I was out but turned very bad and cold to the second half of the day so huge respect.

The morning after I was planning to be around for the awards but my car battery died and needed a Jump start from the RAC. Because the boot of the car rental didnt have a key slot I ended up dismantling my bike in the car to take out & pack for air travel.

In light of last couple of weeks you can only take every day as it comes.. things could be worse I could be one these guys ;-)

Weekend (non-Olympic) roundup www.tri247.com

Aberdeen Metro Dyce 1/2 Marathon

I was planning to withdraw from this event as I had Sunday penciled as a recovery day but after Mr Cline wrote a nice article mentioning me and then an ear bashing on the phone from my Great Aunt for not withdrawing in time, I changed my mind to see what I would do under severe fatigue conditions.

Training volume is very high just now in prep for the UK ironman defence. The next 3-4 weeks is ultimately what will determine my performance come Sept 7th. The more I thought about it the more sense it made to me to was to race replicating an Ironman race day feeling session.

Saturdays training session was a mammoth hilly 215km bike up to Tomintoul via the Lecht (highest ski centre & village in the UK) with a 40 min run off (7hr 15 mins on the saddle). My legs were a bit wrecked last night.

For the race I had in my head to run a bit faster than my marathon pace for Ironman in around 1hr 20 min which I wasn't far off hitting in the end.

I cycled out to event which gave me a nice warm up to try stimulate the leg circulation from overnight stiffness. From the start I felt actually OK until I hit Mile 1 and then worked for it until the end. The course is on the old railway line that stretchs from Dyce and eventually end up in Fraserburgh. The course was basically an out and back and quite deceptive in its flatish apppearance as you actually climb 500ftish steadily to the turn around point. Initially I was in 2nd place I then dropped to 4th and then up to 3rd which I maintained solo from about mile 4 until the end.

Next race will be the Little Woody (a 1/2 Ironman race) in 2 weeks time so Ive allowed myself a rest/travel day for that one ;-)

The olympics is just a week away 3 of my buddies from Australia & France have qualified so watch out for The Swede and X flatmate Lisa Norden, The Swiss Miss Daniella Ryf and Canada's Carolyn Murry.

Lisa won last yrs U23 World Championship and has a 2nd,3rd & 5th in the world cup races this season. Daniella won this years World U23 Champs and also a 3rd at one of the World cups and Carolyn won The South African World Cup a couple of months ago. So fingers crossed for a good race for all of them.

Conditions were quite challenging... It was cold, it was wet, it was windy. Normal Scottish conditions one might say - added to that a strong sea swell with lots of jelly fish schools to navigate through on the swim leg and there’s your race… Its good to be back in the homeland.

I got off to very poor start from the gun maybe from the cold conditions and found myself in a bit of tussle with the main field for the first few hundred meters until I hit clear water (except for the jellyfish) but by this time David M.& Michael A. were well clear. At loop 1 of the swim I was 1 min down and then 3 mins down on the 2nd sea exit. The swim was maybe a bit long or just hard conditions but I wasn’t expecting to be as far behind as I was.

The bike went well & I moved through the field from 4th up into 2nd place with the fastest bike split of the day (1:07.45 - 42km) but I wasn’t able to make the jump to David ahead me. Entering T2 I think unclipped my helmet just before I had my bike on the rail and received a 2 min penalty. A bit embarrassing really as I told a couple of newbie triathletes from Metro Aberdeen run club about the rule just prior to the race start. The penalty didn’t make any difference to my placing but I guess you should practice what you preach. The run went quite smoothly but one things for sure those sand dunes on that run route are just as tough every year I race here.

Since coming home I’ve had a lot loose ends etc to tie up from being away so long & tried compensating with shorter & sharper training sessions with some local events into the frey(1 half marathon, 2 Olympic dist tri’s + 20 mile bike TT & 25 bike mile TT). Four 1st‘s & a 2nd isn’t too bad going and I’m quite happy of where I’m at as I start to build big heavy volume weeks towards hitting Ironman UK again in Sept.

The plan after UK is to meet up with my Dresdner Kleinwort teammates in San Diego at there camp, recover and try keep ticking over for the world Champs which is 4 weeks after the UK event.

It’s that time of year again and the Tour De France is back on - 3600km over 20 days!

GB’s Mark Cavendish won yesterdays stage and it’s not that often you see a GB athlete on the podium in Tour.

On the topic of the Tour I just happen to be reading "In Search Of Robert Millar" Great Britain’s (& Scotland’s) only podium finisher & King of the Mountains winner. I’m only part way into the book but I’m finding it just as enthralling read as I did with the Grame Obree autobiography “The flying Scotsman” and “The Death of Marco Pantani” this past 6 months.

I came across a Granada documentary about him made in 1985 on U tube which I’ve pasted into the link below.

Mearns Leader Article

All in all Im very pleased with todays run. I wasn't really sure where I was with my running due to a lack of miles in my legs in the past 2 months & Sherborne is now in the foremost of my mind being only 9 weeks away.

You always want to well at the races but the 1/2 for me was to be treated as a hard training session and a bench mark to see where Im at.

I sandwiched the run with a 22km warmup bike and afterwards a 80km effort paced cyle followed by a 3km swim to end the day out.

Ive raced the course once before and its not a race known for pb's. The first 4-5 mile is all uphill with miles 6-7 rolling up & down before decending downhill to the finish banner.

I lead the first 2 miles off the bang and started flagging a bit from hitting too fast a pace early on. I dropped back to 2nd place alone until about mile 5 I was the picked up by the next runner. I ran with him until about mile 9 until I made my 2nd surging move through an aid station and pushed on to bridge the gap to John by mile 10 (the then leader). After a brief breather I then pushed ahead again to make another break which was enough for the win.

The Scottish Olympic distance triathlon Champs is next weekend so I'll be heading down to Gullane beach on Saturday to defend the title I won last year.

A Win at Home - 29th June

Knockburn Standard Triathlon Aberdeenshire, Scotland

1st

I came home mid week to Aberdeen, (6 weeks earlier than planned) & I’m back coaching myself once more.

Its 10 weeks until Ironman UK looking at the calendar and Plan X has been penciled. There’s a lot work ahead and the volume will be building up to 40 hrs week loads but I Plan incorporating quite a few local events as training in my run up to the Ironman UK competition.

Shortly after the Sherborn race I plan to meet up with my Norman & Dresdner Kleinwort team at there San Diego camp before competing again in Hawaii. This will be 2 Ironman’s in 4 weeks - a case of recover and keep ticking over until the fireworks of Kona begin.

This past weekend just happened to be my club Triathlon’s race at Knockburn Loch, which is 20 miles outside Aberdeen near Banchory. The race is first class as always, thanks to all the club members & volunteers for putting on the event each year and especially to Bert Macintosh who continues to develop his land & facilities personally so Aberdeenshire & the Fleet Feet club could have their own open water Triathlon race.

I was looking forward to the race although unplanned I hadn’t had the chance race here for 2 years so I jumped on the chance to get an entry & the opportunity to catch up with Fleet club members & friends alike.

The swim was lengthened from the last time I raced here in 2006 and I would say it was nearer 1900m looking at the swim split times. The bike leg is a very challenging hilly 42km route that takes you in and around Royal Deeside and this year was exposed to pretty strong headwind gusts on the flatter sections of the 3 lap course before heading out onto a ½ & ½ road / offroad run course that see’s you climbing to the top of Stanes circle from the loch within the 10km course route.

After the race I had the chance to some PR shots in and around knockburn courtesy of IMAC Images. Race photos from the event are online now on the link below

In the next month or so I plan doing a couple of ½ marathons that I’ll cycle out to, firstly theStonehaven ½ marathon this weekend and also The city of Aberdeen Metro ½ marathon next month. On the Triathlon front I plan to race the Gullane Triathlon again this year, I believe it’s holding the Scottish Champs for the 2nd time and then the Little Woody ½ Iron race as a lead up to Ironman UK.

UK 70.3 Report & Update June 24th

UK 70.3

Going into this race I set myself a few goals were which were to nail a good swim , be up there with the leaders from the get go, execute good transitions and keep to an incident free race after the mayhem I encountered at a local race in France the week before.

Although I’ve done a couple of ½ iron races in Scotland (Aberfeldy Scot Middle Dist Champs) & Canada (Oliver ½ Iron) this was my 2nd WTC ranked 70.3 event.

I was hoping to improve on my 7th place last year but would be content with a top 10 placing considering the pro line up.

My running legs seemed to gone AWOL the past couple of month for one reason or another but the challenge of the UK 70.3 as one of the toughest ½ irons in the world would give me a good measuring stick to see where I was at with the Ironman in mind later on in the season.

The weather in the morning looked ever so promising with clear blue sky’s and a mist across the half the swim course. This changed quite rapidly off the bang. I hit the swim hard as planned & to be honest couldn’t see anything ahead and made sure I kept up with the front group swimmers feet & bubbles as I didn’t want to get lost in the mist.

Exiting the water in front group I was quite happy to see only Rhodes & Bayliss mounting there bikes before me. I think Fraser must of got a 30 sec or buffer off the front of the swim pack similar last years race.

The weather had came in quite fast but I was quite happy knowing that I was where I needed to be with only Stephen in site & found myself 2nd wheel with Bryan Rhodes behind. Quite early on Bryan fell off the pace with rubbing brakes and we were then joined by Luke Bell not too long after.

It was about mile 20 in the bike when Stephen made a darting move on one of the steep ascents with a sharp left at the bottom and made a significant gap between Luke and myself. Luke then made time on me on start of climb sections & I soon fell off the front pace. My bike leg was pretty uneventful and lost my early rythem towards the end of the 1st lap. I rode the rest of the 1st lap alone and early into the 2nd lap Nick Saunders passed me distinctively and I was alone again passing the back markers through bad speels of rain & 1 hail storm until the last 10-15 miles when Bib No. 9 passed me.

I picked up again and got into T2 in 6th place but exiting in 5th.

If I could hold onto 5th I would of been very happy but not long into the I experienced some bad leg cramps in my hamstings to manage and also lost feeling to both feet with pins & needles (a very horrible feeling I’ve experienced a few times before). On the 1st lap I passed quite early by the No. 10 and also by 2 others and then was held my position to the end.

On the whole I wasn’t totally enamoured with my race performance but when I reflect on what I wanted to achieve out of the race I ticked the boxes & I was at similar point this last season.

Since the weekend I’ve turned 30 - so It's official Im no longer a youngster

I have also parted ways with the coach & squad I was working with the last 6 months.

It wasnt a planned descion & Im a little sad to of left the squad but Im that not sorry either. It was professional descion on both parts.

The weather in Les Angles had finally turned good in my last few days there but Ce la vie, life goes on.

Going solo in Aberdeen is what ground a winner last year so there no reason It can't be done again. I’m back in Aberdeen & plotting my strategy to move forward to the next level.

The knock burn Tri is this weekend which my home triathlon clubs race which I’m looking forward to doing. Further a field I plan doing the little Woody in England in August before my big target race of the year Ironman UK & then World Champs in Hawaii 4 weeks after.

Firstly congratulations’ to Daniella Ryf (Switzerland), one of girl’s that’s in Darren’s training group. She won the women’s elite U23 World Crown title last week in Vancouver, also to Scotland’s Kirsty McWilliam winning the Junior World title, awesome performances. The world champs turned out be a good weekend for GB with Helen tucker winning the senior women’s world title and also to Alistair Brownlee winning the Junior title for the 2nd time.

BTF Article

I’m going to be in Wimbleball, England this weekend to the race the UK 70.3 Ironman comp (½ iron man distance). Hopefully there will be some favourable weather unlike the Pyrinees just now. I can’t remember the last day we had above 9 C.

This years field is the stiffest ever, with the likes of Chris McCormack, Spencer Smith, Luke Bell, Bryan Rhodes, possibly Cameron Brown, Fraser Cartmell & Stephen Bayliss all on the starting list.

Last year I placed 7th in this competition & I’m just hoping to be up there mixing it with them, execute a good incident free race and get a good gauge of where I’m at with my training just now…

I say incident free as I’ve had 2 falls in the past week. Fall 1 was in Germany whist aerodynamic testing with the DKIB team at the Kaarst Busten aerodrome (near Dussledorf) and then a collision with a car amongst a no. other bike issues in a French Olympic race the past weekend. I placed 8th but without dwelling on the no. mishaps, culminating with hitting a car, I can only say it was an absolute disaster. Haven done the race hopefully it’ll of blown the cobwebs out for the season.

You may get a live feed on the Ironman live link below. The race is Sunday

15th June, 6am start.

Re-Location

I’ve been a bit sporadic in my Diary posts of late, I can only apologise but with bouts of illness and a nasty viral infection that KO’d me for 2 weeks along with the world’s most unreliable laptop I’ve tried putting some updates on my chat page on my whereabouts and wellbeing.

As you might of guessed (or not for that matter) I left the Gold Coast in April and now based in Les Angles, France, which is in the Pyrenees near the Spanish boarder.

This will be my second home this this year (& 3rd ever triathlon camp), this will also be the first time I’ll have trained at altitude.

I’m currently living in a chalet type hotel at about 1600m in a small ski village. With the ski season well over its like living in a ghost town much of the time but it has a nice view of a lake in valley below and the ski runs behind my appartment.

Our squad group swims at the Olympic centre in Font Remeu which is almost 1900m altitude and there a few other tri squads using the centre as a base camp for the up coming Olympics.

The weather here is quite unpredictable at times - when the sun is out can get pretty hot & dry but being in the mountains the weather can turn the other way just as fast. Kit for both extremes is needed especially on my long rides. With the air being less dense & dry it Im finding hydration is just as important as in hot climates.

Dresdner Kleinwort Triathlon Team

Its now official that I am a Dresdner Kleinwort triathlon team member.

This has lifted much of the financial burden and associated triathlon equipment sponsorship this year and I’m very fortunate to of landed on feet with this.

The team captain is 2X World Ironman champion Norman Stadler, amoungst other ironman champions around the world.

Part of the teams main ethos is based on there anti-doping programme that seems to be extremely lacking in middle/long distance triathlon when compared to Olympic funded sports.

To read more about the triathlon team, team members, concepts, and its role see the link below.

- Its been noted on tri-talk that I look a bit like Kevin Spacy on the team shot above, but I cant see it myself.

The City of Aberdeen Sports Personality of the year 2007

Among my German team commercial commitments en route from Australia I was honoured to be nominated for the Aberdeen Sports Personality of the year award.

I was voted runner-up behind Jackie Lockhart Olympic medallist (curling) with David Carry commonwealth swim champion placing 3rd.

In my absence I asked Bert Macintosh (one of my main backers to turn pro in 2007) from MPH to collect my award on my behalf.

I was also extremly happy to hear that Pat kenedy won volunteer of the year award on the same evening. I have known Pat for many years from my days as a dolphin & Coast swimmer. It wasnt until after I gave up swimming I came to relise how much parents and volunteers put in to help out others so it was really gratifying to learn she won this award.

Race Update

In light of a crappy April and May I’ve withdrawn from Lanzaroti this month and think my first hit out will be in a local Olympic distance race at the start of June and then Ironman 70.3 UK on the 15th June. The competition is the stiffest ever with Reining world iron man champion Chris Mcormack, Bryan Rhodes, Fraser Cartmell & Stephen Bayliss amongst others currently on the starting list.

What I’ve been up to & Future Plans

Post Race - New Zealand

Since the race I enjoyed a weeks R&R in Taupo.

Pictured above is the McKnight family that so kindly offered me a home stay during my time in New Zealand. Robert, Christine & myself along with there children Bradley, Ethan & Jessica. Robert was also the Ironman race communications director.

Following the race finish, I spent an hour or so in the medic tent to get my eye looked at which did did eventually return to 100% a few hours later. The doctors at the time couldn’t diagnose what had happened but as a guess reckoned my retina became enflamed from a bad reaction in the water that put my vision out of focus.

The awards ceremony was good fun as usual. Andy Kerr an abroad Scot took great pride posing as myself as he swaned round McCoulis bar as myself (wearing a kilt too) until later on in the night until it was spotted I had just walked in the door.

I was also invited to the volunteer’s dinner the day after with Rob & Christine. A big thanks to all the supporters, volunteers, organisers and helpers without which add to the atmosphere created and put on a race that otherwise wouldn't be possible. It should be noted that population of Taupo has a population of 20,000 and a staggering 10% of the local community come ro help out at the ironman event every year.

The next 5 days were really spent indoors recovering, eating junk food, sleeping and watching DVD's.

On the Friday I was asked to go into the local Primary school to do a small talk about triathlon & sport at Bradley’s class (Rob’s eldest son) which was very interesting. The kids were 9 yrs old and bombarded me with 100's of questions like "did you win" "where are you from" and most importantly "Did I have a pointy helmet".

I brought my race bike in for display which seemed to attract the bulk of the attention as I had to explain how my bike repair canister worked and why I had only one solid looking wheel.

At the weekend I squeezed a touristy action packed couple of days that included a 15,000 sky dive, 47m bungy jump and a couple walks to Huka Falls & Craters of the moon.

Craters of the moon is a volcanic part of Taupo - very similar to Kona volcanic craters except the steam and bubbling mud is surrounded by what looked like Scottish heather.

Future Plans:

I’ve been asked by quite a few friends when I’ll be back in God’s country, Scotland.

For the moment I’ll continue the good climate training in the Gold Coast until mid April at which time I will then travel back to Europe for a Press Conference release regarding the German Triathlon Team I have been lucky enough to sign for. From there I intend to meet back up with my coach Darren Smith where he’s setting up summer camp at altitude in Les Angles in the French Pyrenees.

From Les Angles I will fly straight from altitude to race Ironman Lanzaroti (May 24th) and then return to Aberdeen for 2 weeks recovery and attend one of my best friend’s wedding the following weekend. I’ll then return to Les Angles for the remainder of the summer to prepare for my Ironman UK defence (Sept 7th) and onto to San Diego & Hawaii to finalise preparations for the World Ironman Champs (Oct 11th).

Darren’s squad has almost doubled since I’ve retuned from New Zealand.

Kona Qualification met on roll down - Mission accomplished!

With 6 weeks training behind me I was glad just to finish under the circumstances. I didn’t have the smoothest of final run ins for the race but training times looked quite promising. I had a small crash on the bike just over a week out and came away with a few scrapes & bruises but very lucky considering I had narrow miss with a jeep & its trailer before coming over the handle bars during hill reps.

I arrived in Aukland on Monday night hoping to catch my Taupo connection but came down with horrible stomach bug I picked up in the Gold Coast and was sick in customs before taken away to be checked over by the airport medi staff.

I’d just like to thank David Liversidge (an Aberdeen swimming buddy) & his family that came to my aid in Aukland and put me to bed & also to Rob & Christine McKnight & there family for there great hospitality whilst in Taupo.

Arriving in Taupo my energy seemed to return by mid week & I switched to a non fiber diet to allow my guts to settle and concentrated in getting my fluids & body salts back up again before building on carbs latterly. My resting Hr was a bit elevated from my norm of 36-40 beats in the morning but I felt optimistic going into the race today anyway.

Race day turned out to be very hard days work for what would equate to a good weeks, grocery shopping in the Gold coast by the time I crossed the finish line.

Swim conditions were pretty good, calm & fairly warm @19 C.

The weather however was cold wet, rainy and generally miserable. But hey it’s been like that when I train back home in Scotland and quite a lot of the time since I’ve been in the Gold Coast too.

The swim was a 1 lap circuit & the bike & run sections were both 2 loops. There was a Strong head wind out & tail wind back on the bike and a tail wind out & strong head wind back on the marathon loops.

The swim produced some fast swim times. Doe exiting in 45 mins then the 1st group in about 47 mins. I came in on the 2nd pack in 49 mins after veering right off course twice during the return leg. Exiting the water I had blurred vision in my right eye which I initially thought was just a very strong fog in the air until the penny dropped 20km into the bike leg but left eye was ok. My eye was like this during the whole event and didn’t come too until evening time.

Hitting the bike portion my heart rate was searing between 150-160 beats from the start of the bike until I finally hit the wall at 138km (about 3 kms before the turn around point) – which was just as well otherwise I might not of made back to transition.

I trundled into transition In about 17th spot after dropping about 10 places to gingerly begin the marathon run, Initially running on empty but I found my legs about 7km in & then had a bout of pins & needles in my right foot from about 5km-15km until feeling returned. I ran an unconfirmed 3:03 but checking the results again it came up 3:05 even so isn’t too shabby at this stage of the season and I managed to scrape into the money & top 10 by the end in a shade of the 9hr mark.

All in all not bad for 6 weeks of training but I can think of better things to do than 9hrs of torture for 250 bucks - still its what I love to do
